an ORIGIN STORY OF 420
The origins of 420 date back to a group of San Rafael, CA high school students known as "The Waldos."
They would meet by a wall at 4:20 pm between classes to smoke cannabis .
According to this legend, “420” became code for marijuana amongst the “long-hairs” in 1971.
An original Waldo, Dave Reddix, became friends with one of the founding members of The Grateful Dead, Phil Lesh. The Grateful Dead would then go on to popularizing the term.
On December 28, 1990, fans distributed flyers at an Oakland Coliseum concert, inviting people to gather on Mt. Tamalpais at 4:20 pm on April 20th, for a collective smoke-out.
This grassroots promotion among Deadheads helped establish 4/20 as the holiday we know today.
